Southern politicians in Congress signed the Southern Manifesto that accused the Federal government of interfering with the independence of the southern states

Dixiecrats was a name given to these politicians

President Truman worried that if he annoyed these politicians they would vote against any of his reforms

Wanted to put forward an anti-lynching bill and a civil rights bill but they were rejected by the Dixiecrats

Many joined the White Citizens’ Council

1960 presidential election, John Kennedy had to be careful not to upset them so he kept civil rights low on his agenda and focused on foreign affairs
